Gluten Free Pasties

Traditionally, pasties have turnips in them. But I hate turnips! So I make mine with only potato. If you like turnips, by all means use them.

  • 3 medium sized potatoes
  • 1 large carrot
  • 1 large turnip (optional)
  • 1 small onion
  • 350 g lean beef mince
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas
  • 2 sticks celery
  • 2 tbs parsley
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp Pepper
  • 1 tbsp mixed fresh herbs such as parsley, oregano, thyme etc.
  • 1 batch gluten free flaky pastry
  • 1 egg lightly beaten
  • Preheat the oven to 200C (400F)
  • Grate the carrots, finely dice the potato, turnip (if you’re using it) and onion. Slice the celery finely.
  • Mix all the ingredients together, except for the egg
  • Roll out the pastry to about 5mm thick
  • Use a bread and butter plate as a template to cut circles in the pastry
  • Paint a rim of beaten egg around each pastry circle
  • Put the filling onto one half of each circle and fold the other half over
  • Press the edges together to seal
  • Put the pastries on a baking dish that has had been covered with a piece of baking paper
  • Brush the tops with beaten egg and stab a couple of holes in the top to allow the steam to escape
  • Bake for about 30 minutes, until golden brown
