Vitamin Supplements and Celiac Disease

A study of vitamin supplements and Celiac Disease has shown that they are effective in raising low levels of certain amino acids in people with celiac disease.

One of the issues with celiac disease is that there is a tendency to be unable to absorb vital vitamins and minerals. Many dietitians and medical people will tell you that your diet should be sufficient to get all the vitamins and nutrients you need from your diet without resorting to supplements.

However, this study looked at the levels of an amino acid (homocysteine) in the blood of people with celiac disease. They found that, without B group supplements, this amino acid was lacking, meaning people with celiac disease had a lack of B12, folate and other B group vitamins in their systems.

It was recommended that people who had recently been diagnosed with celiac disease should consider taking vitamin supplements until they are completely recovered from all the symptoms associated with gluten intolerance.
